New members for Out Of The Fold

Out of the Fold are delighted to welcome four new members from the beginning of 2019

Susie Yates, Heather Black, Dee Nicholson and Vendulka Battais will be joining the group and will exhibit with us for the first time at Blackthorpe Barns in May as part of the Quilters' Guild Big Quilt Show event.

Janet and Penny leave Out of the Fold

Out of the Fold are sad to announce that two of our longest serving members - Janet Valentine and Penny Bamber will leave at the end of 2018.

We have so enjoyed working alongside these talented textile artists and seeing their work develop over the last ten years.  We shall miss you and wish you all the best for the future.

Festival of Quilts 2018

Several Out Of The Fold members had quilts on show at the International Festival of Quilts at the NEC Birmingham in August 2018.

Lynne Pretty entered her quilt 'Spirit of Canada' into the pictorial class.  Lynne says:
"Inspired by my holiday in Canada, I wanted to create a piece which showed the vastness of the landscape. I used images of the First Nation spirit animals in the quilting"
Hand dyed and commercially printed fabrics. Raw edged applique.
Machine quilting. Thermofax screeprinting.

Lynne also entered a miniature. 'Bury Abbey' inspired by the architecture of Bury St Edmunds abbey and cathedral.

Mary McIntosh entered a double-sided quilt into the Quilters Guild Challenge called 'Colourwheel of time'.
Calico, stitched, painted, dyed, discharged and cut. Hand dyed fabric woven through.

Mary wins Ann Tuck award

Out of the Fold member Mary McIntosh has been awarded the Ann Tuck award for her entry into the Contemporary Quilt (CQ) challenge 2018

The challenge theme was 'In Print'. 

Mary's work considers the ways in which we are bombarded with news and views from all sorts of media.  Everyone has an opinion but no-one seems to have the answer. 

Techniques: several layers of newspaper lamination onto sheer organza, machine stitch, coloured with paints and inks

The whole 'In Print' exhibition will tour the UK. Having already been on display at the Needle Museum in Redditch and at the West Country Quilt Show

2nd - 30th October  The Curve Gallery, Bangor, Northern Ireland

6th - 15th February 2019  Quilt Fest, Llangollen, Wales

26th March - 25th April 2019  Old Chapel Textile Centre, Newbury

Out of the Fold at Uttoxeter

Out of the Fold travelled to the midlands in April this year to exhibit as part of the British Quilt and Stitch Village event heald at Uttoxeter race course

The show was well received with lots of positive comments from visitors


The work from the 'Out of the East' exhibition first shown at Textiles East in Feb 2018 at Swavesey formed part of the exhibition


All twelve members of the group had work on show. 


OOTF members Karen Frost and Mary McIntosh also offered workshops at the show


Members took along some items for sale too

Jane doing her usual magic for Textiles East


It is fascinating how different members of Out Of The Fold work in different ways and use their own set of favoured 'tools of the trade' 

Jane has been transforming a piece of discharged black linen wholecloth using her own yummy hand dyed threads
